Situated under the shadow of Mt Ruapehu lies Horopito Motors. This sprawling yard is a time warp of a bygone era, when Vauxhalls, Hillmans and other extinct brands ruled the roads. The place is a magnet for car enthusiasts throughout New Zealand and the world. Established in the late 30’s, Smashed Palace is a family run business that has been handed down through the generations. For owners, Colin and Barbara Fredricksen, the place is more than a job – they have a genuine love affair with old cars and the many people who restore, drive or care for them.
Follow the day-to-day work of the Fredricksens and the team of people they employ in their yard and at their other business, a B and B in Raetihi. With few computers and 80 odd years of car collections, Horopito Motors does at fight sight, seem chaotic. But there is a joyous madness to the way the place operates. Barbara and Colin have an astounding knowledge of where the parts, or a car may be. The company software is their brains.
